Safari in Kenya & Tanzania

I just returned from a breathtaking week-long safari in Kenya and Tanzania. Our trip spanned four locations, including Amboseli, Lake Manyara, the Serengeti, and Ngorongoro Crater. The only animals I had photographed prior to safari were my dog and those of my clients, so photographing wild animals in their native habitats was a fun challenge.  I’ll share another post about what I learned photographing on safari, but wanted to share some snapshots from our trip.

The safari gave me a much better appreciation of the amazing Earth we live on and the importance of conservancy. Special thanks to the team at Natural World Safaris who went above and beyond to show us the best of Kenya and Tanzania, and helped with our beautiful accommodations.

A few memories that I will treasure:

  • Observing a lioness track a herd of gazelle in the Serengeti.
  • Listening to a pod of hippos during morning play, with lots of splashing and grunts
  • Eerie laughter of a pack of hyenas as they reunited and ran off into the savanna for the day
  • Waking around 4 AM to the commotion of a buffalo rubbing against our tent’s side walls. Watching a male lion stroll into the same camp shortly after breakfast(!!!)
  • An endless sky of stars and the Milky Way on full display at night. I had my first foray into astrophotography on safari, and cannot wait to continue learning
  • Eating globs of dust on our daily game drives and learning to shut our Land Cruiser’s windows at *just* the right time to avoid further dust from oncoming vehicles
  • Spending quality time with my husband and friends who indulge in my crazy travel ideas

My photography journey began with me wanting to take better travel photos as we visited new places, and each adventure has proved to be incredibly vital to continuing to inspire and challenge my creativity. Even if you’re not a photographer, I think it’s important and vital to explore new places and people. Travel makes us richer in experiences and memories. Stay curious, my friends.Kenya and Tanzania Safari- Fine Art Photographer

BEHIND THE LENS

meet Winnie

Director, curator, documentarian, photographer, storyteller. Inspired by history, culture, and the stories that connect us.

My family immigrated to the United States as refugees, leaving their lives behind in search of a brighter future. With all their worldly belongings contained in the suitcases they carried, the scant photographs that crossed the ocean have served as a lifeline to stories untold, allowing me to piece together my family legacy, one image at a time. Decades later, I discovered photography as a medium to document my travels (37 countries and counting!) and encapsulate the joy and happiness that each new adventure brings.
