The 2020 cherry blossom season came early this year, only to be cut short by social distancing, and I am so grateful that we were able to make Bree and Robin’s cherry blossom engagement session happen! Their session brings so many smiles to my face because of their easy-going personalities…and because it’s the last time I photographed before quarantine *cue the tears*.

Photographing engagements during peak cherry blossom season can be tricky- it requires a lot of pre-planning, flexibility in schedules, and patience navigating through the crowds (although you wouldn’t be able to tell from these photos, right!?). Oh, and did I mention that we start at sunrise? Nonetheless, DC cherry blossom engagement sessions make my photographer heart oh-so-happy. It’s the perfect mix of beautiful nature and classing Washington DC architecture. *Pro tip: the Tidal Basin tends to be the most crowded area, whereas the other ‘classic’ DC monuments such as the Lincoln and surrounding mall tend to be more open. We’re speaking in relative terms though! You should still anticipate the crowds and chat with your photographer about mid-week options.

Anyway, back to Bree and Robin. Last March, they took a trip to Kuai. On the 3rd day of their trip, Robin suggested that they watch the sunset from Shipwreck Cliff before dinner. Once they hiked up, Robin led Bree to the proposal spot by telling her she would be able to see turtles from the lookout point. He had Bree pose for a picture facing away from him, and when she turned around, he was on one knee. Bree grew up in southern California, and spent many summers with her family in Kuai. Unbeknownst to Robin at the time, Bree and her family would hike Shipwreck Cliff every trip.

These two were champs in braving the cold and giggling through the shivers. I know a lot of you will ask (because I did too!)- Bree’s gorgeous dress is made by Needle and Thread. They make the most gorgeous gowns, perfect for engagement photos or intimate weddings. I cannot wait for their wedding next year!

BEHIND THE LENS

meet Winnie

Director, curator, documentarian, photographer, storyteller. Inspired by history, culture, and the stories that connect us.

My family immigrated to the United States as refugees, leaving their lives behind in search of a brighter future. With all their worldly belongings contained in the suitcases they carried, the scant photographs that crossed the ocean have served as a lifeline to stories untold, allowing me to piece together my family legacy, one image at a time. Decades later, I discovered photography as a medium to document my travels (37 countries and counting!) and encapsulate the joy and happiness that each new adventure brings.
