10 Tips to Dress for a Styled Photo Session

August 27, 2017

With fall just around the corner, it’s time to start thinking about holiday photos. Oftentimes one of the biggest stressors is what to wear- so I’m here to guide you on your quest to achieve that put-together-and-coordinated-but-not-like-you-tried-too-hard look. Here’s what I observe most in both my family and couples sessions: there is no such thing as too dressed up. When we take the time to thoughtfully select outfits that reflect our personalities and style, confidence shines through. And that shows in your photos! So without further ado, here are ten tips to rock your photo session:

    1. Don’t be afraid to use a theme as a launching point for your session- anything that reflects you, your relationship, and your lifestyle- casual, classic, bohemian, formal.
    2. Great clothing choices are the ones you are comfortable and can move in! Stay away from restrictive, overly fussy options, and make sure undergarments are hidden.
    3. Clothing should be the same level of formality. It’s hard for a session to look cohesive if one person is all buttoned up while the other person is in sneakers and a tee.
    4. Avoid sneakers and a tee, particularly if it has large, noticeable logos or text. Horizontal stripes tend to widen a person on camera, and smaller patterns can be lost in translation on camera.
    5. Fitted clothes translate better on camera than baggy clothes. Bring a belt to cinch dresses and blouses that that may look bulky on camera.
    6. Don’t skimp on the accessories! Adding accessories like a headband, jacket, scarf, jewelry, or cute footwear can create a very stylized look.
    7. Color, texture, and layers are important. Layering adds depth to a photo- so instead of wearing a shirt and jeans, try adding a jacket, scarf, and some fun accessories.
    8. Adding a pop of color can really make your photo. Red shoes, a blue tie, or a yellow jacket are small, subtle ways to add color to your session.
    9. Get dolled up! Photo sessions are a great time to get professional makeup done and/or pop on a set of false eyelashes. Ladies: bring a pair of comfortable walking shoes if you plan on wearing heels!
    10. Try to coordinate outfits without looking too “matchy.” Avoid wearing the same colors and instead, find a color palette you love and piece together items from that palette that complement.
